Once again the #14 Hyperion Racing BMW M4 Gt3 with a massive outing. This time for the annual Make A Wish, Drive For Wishes 8 hours of Le Mans and bringing in a whopping $1,700 for the charity.

The effort was piloted by Alex Caruso, William Brennan, Nathan Deering and Turner Schroll. The team was running on a little less preparation for this outing than usual due to focus being placed in some of the other high caliber leagues currently on their plate. However, with Hyperion Racing securing a P2 earlier this year in the Majors 24hr of Le Mans the guys had an excellent starting point in terms of setup. With little to no edits to that car's original plan the boys were ready to put on a show.

That being said, before the action even kicked off the team had raised over $500 early in the week. As the week progressed and Thursday’s official practice session arrived, it was now finally time to see how things would shape out. The team was P2 in the session and felt like they had a really good chance to show what they had against some top tier drivers. In the meantime the team’s donations were already moving towards $1000.

As Sunday’s race session arrived they had secured nearly $1500 and were more than prepared to fight for a win. Driver Alex Caruso would go on to put the #14 in P3 during the short 15 minute qualifying session. He would later go on to gain a position on the start and get up to P2 in the early minutes of the race.

This is where the day’s luck would begin to fade. Shortly after the start the car was given a slow down penalty coming out of Tertre Rouge making its way onto the Mulsanne Straight. This would turn into the car dropping all the way back to P13 in a matter of mere meters. The team were given a break from Race Control and not forced to serve what seemed like a race ending stop and hold 45 second penalty. From here driver Alex Caruso would fight tooth and nail back to P8 before ending his stint almost 2 hours into the race.

Next driver Turner Schroll would get in the car and continue to work the car through a mix of traffic. His double stint would be cut a few laps short with the deployment of the day’s first Safety Car. He would then hand the car over to fellow driver William Brennan who would prepare the car for the ensuing restart.

William navigated the car through minor chaos and was able to manage two very good full stints without any major incident before handing the car off to the day’s final driver Nathan Deering with just under 3 hours to go.

Nathan would do a fantastic job during the opening laps of his stint while the rest of the team was hard at work on the pit wall determining the final strategy calls that would lay ahead. At this point the day’s second and final Safety Car would be deployed and the team would then make a stop under yellow to prepare them for a sprint to the end. On the ensuing restart the car was sitting very pretty in P7 with 1 or possibly 2 stops left to make.

The second bit of bad luck would come shortly after the drop of the green flag where on cold tires and a heavy fuel load the car would have a massive oversteer snap and would drop back to the end of the line of Gt3 cars. Nathan would do a great job keeping the car out of any damaging contact and ultimately only lose 1 position to cars they were fighting with on track.

The remainder of the race would turn out to be a fight to regain lost time and salvage the last of a decent day on the track. They would go on to end the day in P7 in a day of “What it could have been”. At the same time the team would go on to raise well over $1,700 for the Make A Wish, Drive For Wishes 2023 event which would also raise a total of $21,191.

This event truly highlights the massive impact the sim racing community can have when collectively setting a goal for good! The Hyperion Racing Team would like to thank the Make A Wish International, Drive For Wishes, HydroRace Geodesic, and all those who donated and made this event possible! Look out for the Hyperion Racing Team’s next official outing on December 2nd during the next round of IVRA Clubsport.
